Love of soccer up in Lawton

NICK LIVINGSTON
SPORTS WRITER

Soccer is one of those interesting sports.
It’s beloved around the world, but somewhat shunned and misunderstood here in the United States.
It’s a sport that if you love it, you love it. You have that burning desire and that raging fire that makes the soccer hooligan both an urban legend and maybe your next door neighbor.
There is a love of soccer right here in town, and that love can be seen in the development of the high school programs and the efforts of the Lawton Soccer Club.
It’s the efforts of people like Kent Jester, who led the LSC 93 Red to the Region III President’s Cup competition this last weekend. The Lawton club finished sixth in the event, going 1-1-1 in Flight C play. Jester said if the team had scored one more goal in pool play, they would likely have advanced to the semifinals.
“Every team was so equal it was amazing,” Jester said.
What makes the LSC team so interesting is it’s makeup. It’s a hodgepodge of what Lawton has to offer, with players at Lawton High, Eisenhower and MacArthur all supplying the pop.
It’s one of those situations were school allegiances have to be put aside and rivalries placed on hold while the team comes together for the greater good of making Lawton matter.
However, it’s not as hard as you might think. You see, playing together on a soccer field is much easier for players from Lawton than perhaps other sports are.
The simple reason — they have done this before.
“I’ve had most of these kids for several years and they played club competitive soccer before their high school teams,” Jester said.
It’s that club competitive level that makes youth soccer and soccer in general so unique in sport.
You would never see a group of football players come together and travel around, butting heads with all-star teams from other parts of the state.
You do see AAU teams and traveling teams in basketball, but it just doens’t seem as connected, doesn’t seem as meaningful as a traveling soccer team that has been together since middle school or earlier.
“Club soccer is the roots of soccer across the United States,” Jester said. “You are able to play at different levels and can develop players quicker.”
Playing at different levels means that if the LSC team is better than the level they are currently at, they can go up a level and take on the tougher teams. This weekend, the LSC team played at the President’s Cup lev- el, which is the secondhighest level. The highest is the Premier League level, which is the highest level in the nation.
“It’s better to go play a game that is a 1-0 loss than a 6-0 win,” Jester said.
But this group of kids together is actually a unique thing here in Lawton. As kids get older, their interest in soccer wanes and thoughts turn to other sports.
Or it was a unique thing a few years ago.
“It’s a slow build, we only had two teams a few years ago, and now we have seven,” Jester said.
It’s an interest in soccer that may get an injection of life with the World Cup currently going on. With the USA team having one of the best chances to reach the second round, especially after their 1-1 draw against England on Saturday, soccer may get a jolt in the arm much the same way as women’s soccer got theirs when the USA won the women’s world cup in 1999.
“We usually see a spike during the World Cup years, usually it’s the younger kids and that always helps,” Jester said.
And that injection could mean more competitive soccer players years from now for Jester, and perhaps another trip to either the regional or national championships for Lawton in the future.

Lawton Teams make finals in President's Cup

The boys U17 and U14 competitive teams both made the finals in their respective divisions at the 2010 President's Cup in held in Edmond , OK.
Both games were played on Saturday afternoon. The U17's coached by Kent Jester won the President's Cup with a 2-1 win over FC Highlanders. The U14's coached by Mike Cummings finished 2nd after losing to Edmond Football Club 3-2. Congratulations to both teams for their efforts and accomplishments!
